Last Class notes for Tibetan Buddhism Class

January 16, 2001

This was the last note Candy left on the day when she committed suicide. It was class notes from a Tibetan Buddhist class she attended in the morning of January 16. It was a session on the "bardo" - the intermediate state between death and rebirth, from one second to 49 days.

Letter to the Editor

Jordan High School Falcon's Cry, November 1998
School spirit problems not Student Council's fault

To the editor:

I would like to comment on Kat Campbell's [Oct. 2] letter to the editor. It is not the intent of the letter that disagrees with me. I found her letter cumbersome and embarrassing to read. She did not present her ideas very well, which weakened her overall message.

Her suggestions for improving school spirit were more unrealistic than the concept of school spirit itself. It is really difficult for me to imagine all of the seniors being transported to the mountains and sharing a can of bug spray. It kind of just sounds ridiculous. Most of her ideas were not even worthy of consideration. (However, her mention of reviving the courtyard is an excellent idea.)

I'm still trying to figure out who she was addressing in her letter. Apparently, it was Student Council. This makes no sense. The purpose of Student Council is to encourage school spirit. The only reason why it has been unsuccessful is due to the student body's lack of interest.

Student Council is doing its share. No one has the right to blame it for the decline of school spirit. In a way, Kat Campbell's rejection of Student Council endangers school spirit, rather than promote it.

And also, concerning the part about "challenging authority," Student Council is not an authority figure. Not even close. It isn't us vs. them. It's us vs. ourselves. School spirit, as we all know, is voluntary. In effect, school pride is diminishing. We can't blame anyone except ourselves.
